But first we have to tell you about Friday, Friday...
As you can imagine, we were rather on edge at the thought of dashing to the hospital at the drop of a hat. As it happened, we found ourselves in A&E in Tooting for an entirely different reason.
One tiny mosquito bite and a bad reaction later (pictured) saw us itching our way through Saturday. So concerned for my condition and urge to scratch was Ruth, she failed to let on that she was having some very strong urges herself.
Having filled up on antibiotics and coming to terms with looking temporarily like the elephant man the focus of attention shifted from me to Ruth and the small issue of her contractions. Oh my, here it comes! To quote the film 'Jaws'... "we're gonna need a bigger boat".
Contractions officially started at 9pm on Saturday and by 2am the following morning we were fully in the swing. Over to Ruth to tell you more...
A call to St Thomas's at 4am revealed the unsettling news that they were not accepting any more laboring mothers and we should call an ambulance to take us to the nearest available hospital. This turned out to be Lewisham! Not our destination of choice.
The distraction of travel, settling into the maternity ward and ever quickening contractions took us to 11.44am when the new little lady arrived in the world.
Bess Judith Howes weighed in at 6lbs 5oz including a full head of hair, 10 fingers and 10 toes. Good news considering mum and dad are both from Norfolk.
